What's a Notary Public and What Are They For?
A notary public is a person appointed by the state for verifying official documents or issuing legal vows. If a document has an originator who requires the authentication of signatures, he or she must have it notarized by a notary public. Each document is authenticated by a notary public who ensures the signer its contents. Notary publics ensure that signers are not forced to agree to the terms of the document against their will. It is the notary's main task to validate that any official document signer is actually who they say they are. For the authenticity of the signature to be authenticated, it is necessary that the signer provides proof of ID, it can either take the form a passport or driver’s licence.
What is the best way to get my document validated by a notary?
Notary publics are not allowed to assist with the preparation or signing of official documents. The notary public must remain impartial during the entire process. After the signing of official documents has been authenticated, notaries public are permitted to watch them. Notaries are not allowed to create documents or modify them in any way. This will result in their losing their notary licensing. Unauthenticated documents or in which the signature cannot be confirmed may cause a notary public to refuse to validate the document. Additionally, a notary public must reject any documents which they have a personal financial interest in.

There are rules in each US state which an individual must follow in order to become a licensed notary in that state. The fees allowed for some services are also limited. New York State requires that all notaries public must renew their licenses once every four years. Once the exam is passed, the New York State Department of State issued will issue a license which enables that person to practice as a notary in that state as long as they remain a resident. 3-hour training course must be completed and you need full insurance to become a Florida Notary. A "affidavit in character" must be signed prior to becoming licensed notary. They are also required to be Florida citizens during their four year license. The majority of services offered by Florida Notaries are subject to a maximum charge of $10. California is America's most challenging state to become Notary Public as candidates must successfully pass both a six hour training course as well as a state examination. They must remain a resident of California for the entire duration of their license; they will need to pass a background check. California Notaries can charge anything up to a maximum of 20 dollars for their services. Colorado is allowed to charge $5.00 per signature when notarizing documents. Texas allows a maximum of $6.00 per signature however every signature would be an additional $1.00. To become a notary public in the United States you do not have to be an American citizen. But, it is mandatory to have been a resident of the state in which you practice.
